Inspired by the Italian Renaissance paintings he had admired during his stay in Rome, Paul Dubois met with great success with his plaster model of the Florentine Singer at the 1865 Salon, winning the Medal of Honor. In response to the popularity of neo-Florentine subjects and the model's considerable popularity, Barbedienne began producing a four-dimensional bronze edition of the Florentine Singer the same year. The bronze is dedicated to Jules Renard (1833-1926), a Belgian cartoonist and caricaturist based in Paris, who worked for a number of newspapers including Le Charivari, L'Illustration and Le Monde Illustré.
