Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807-1852) - Lot 26
Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807-1852) Satan Bronze with brown patina Signed and dated "J. Feuchère 1833". H. 35 cm Drawing on biblical, Faustian, Dantesque and Miltonian iconography, Romantic artists in the 19th century favored cursed figures, first and foremost Satan. Feuchère was perfectly in tune with this artistic trend when he exhibited this Satan and the pair of vases that accompany it at the 1834 Salon. The figure of the fallen angel was inspired by Dürer's Melancholy, of which Feuchère owned a proof. "Elbow on knee, chin in hand, [dreaming] of poor human fate", Feuchère's Satan adopts the pose of the Romantic poet, which Carpeaux and Rodin would take up for Ugolin and Le Penseur. Related works: -Jean-Jacques Feuchère, Satan, dark patina bronze, signed "J. Feuchère 1833" on the left terrace H. 34.5cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. RF 4420 ; -Jean-Jacques Feuchère, Satan, 1833, bronze, signed "J. Feuchère 1833", H. 34.5 cm, Paris, Musée de la Vie romantique, inv. 2011.7.
