Six brass scrolls (or scroll fragments) of lapidary inscript - Lot 239
Six brass scrolls (or scroll fragments) of lapidary inscriptions from the Château de Fontarèches (Gard), 1691-1692 These scrolls are written on very thin sheets of brass, rolled up and pierced with small holes to form the writing. They were made by Gabriel de Rossel in 1691 and 1692. Gabriel de Rossel, baron de Fontarèches, seigneur de Cabrières et d'Aubarne (August 7, 1642 - January 21, 1698, Uzès) was the son of François de Rossel, doctor of law and captain of a company of 100 foot soldiers in 1628. He was also a member of the Montpellier Court of Accounts. The barony was granted to his family in May 1664. In 1694, for attending an illicit meeting of Protestants, he was sentenced to the galleys, but his sentence was commuted to imprisonment in Uzès - during which he wrote educational advice to his son - and finally, in 1695, to payment of a fine of 1,500 livres to the Uzès hospital. In 1691 and 1692, as the texts on these scrolls indicate, he had extracts from his will, a sundial and his coat of arms engraved on a white marble plaque above the entrance drawbridge to Château de Fontarèches, some of which still survive in Château de Fontarèches. Curious and rare objects.
