[La Mothe Le Vayer, François de]. - De la liberté et de la s - Lot 247
[La Mothe Le Vayer, François de]. - De la liberté et de la servitude... Paris, Ant. De Sommaville et Aug. Courbe, 1643. [followed by ] Opuscule ou petit traité sceptique, sur cette façon commune de parler "N'avoir pas le sens-commun". Paris, A. de Sommaville, 1646.
A protégé of Richelieu, le Vayer was a follower of skeptical philosophy. In this little treatise, he demonstrates the grip of voluntary servitude linked to alienation, which grows in proportion to our elevation in public office, and contrasts it with the utopia of retirement in literate leisure, following the example of Montaigne, whose heir he is. "Man should be the freest of all creatures... there is perhaps none more enslaved" Such is the paradox posed.
