Translated from the German. Paris, Maradan, 1813. In-8, bound in full contemporary red long-grained morocco, the boards decorated with a gilt plate of large fleurons in spandrels, linked on the sides by three gilt fillets supporting a rocaille motif, all within a gilt frame. In the center, within a diamond-shaped frame of three gilded fillets, a crowned "LP" surrounded by an olive and oak branch. Smooth spine adorned with a twice-repeated arabesque motif, with a gilt reserve for the author and title, interior roulette, chain on the edges, light blue tabis endpapers, gilt edges - headband frayed, slight spotting on the spine, corners rubbed, scattered faint foxing - viii, 406 pp. Illustrated with 13 line-engraved pll. h-t before the letter, featuring archaeological documents from museum collections. Böttiger (1760-1835) was a German archaeologist, educator and writer. In this work of pure imagination, but based on archaeological evidence, he describes in 8 scenes the daily life of a Roman noblewoman. Copy decorated with the crowned cipher of King Louis-Philippe (OHR pl. 2499 fer no. 4).
