Pavel TCHELITCHEW (1898-1957) - Lot 162
Pavel TCHELITCHEW (1898-1957) Portrait of Noël Murphy Looking Right Brush and ink on paper. Bears an apocryphal Tchelitchew signature in ballpoint pen lower left. Inscription on the back of the work: Livre J. Flanner, Paris c'était hier, p. 297, décorateur et peintre des ballets Diaghiliev, Pavel Tchelitchew, 1933 . 29 x 19 cm (view) Noël Haskins Murphy (1896-1982) was an American artist (singer, dancer and actress) who settled in Paris in the 1920s. She lost her husband to war wounds and settled in Orgeval in the Yvelines. She had a brief romance with the famous journalist and Paris correspondent of The New Yorker, Jannet Flanner, friend of Ernest Hemingway, Francis Scott, Key Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Jannet Flanner was an emblematic figure of the Saint-Germain des Prés between the wars, and played a key role in introducing her compatriots to the French intellectual and artistic scene around Cocteau, Gide, Matisse and Picasso, among others. Tchelitchew dedicated one of the two Noël Murphy portraits to him (lot 161).
