Augusto BARROS FERREIRA (1929-1998) - Lot 139
Augusto BARROS FERREIRA (1929-1998) Untitled, 1967 Two gouaches on a single mount, the first signed upper right, countersigned, located in Paris and dated on the back, and the second signed lower center, countersigned, located in Paris and dated on the back. 20.5 x 13.5 cm and 19.5 x 12.5 cm Augusto Barros Ferreira was a Portuguese artist born in Lisbon in 1929 and died there in 1998. A precocious artist and inveterate polyglot, he left Portugal in 1961 to perfect his knowledge and, thanks to a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, spent three years in Hamburg, Germany, where he studied with Hans Thiemann, a disciple of Paul Klee. Fascinated by Paris and its bohemian lifestyle, he settled in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, where he quickly made friends with many artists, including his compatriots Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Manuel Cargaleiro, as well as Serge Poliakoff. In the 1960s and 1970s, Barros exhibited extensively in Paris, where his work was well received by critics ranging from Michel Seuphor to Alain Jouffroy. A veritable figure of the German-Pratin quarter, "Le Portugais", as he liked to be called, was appreciated by all for his wholehearted, proud and honest temperament, characteristics that can be associated with his paintings, "interior landscapes of rigor and austerity" as Jean-Marie Dunoyer put it.
