Joseph Constant (1892-1969) Totem pole Wood sculpture H. 128 cm A native of Russia, Joseph Constant studied painting at the Odessa Academy of Fine Arts and became Fine Arts Inspector during the 1917 Revolution. Two years later, he fled the civil war and anti-Semitic violence. Arriving in Paris in 1923, he set up his studio in the Montparnasse district and enjoyed a certain success with his paintings. Frequenting the Jardin des Plantes with a group of Israeli artists, Constant devoted himself mainly to animal sculpture in the 1930s. Acknowledged abroad, he contributed to the influence of the École de Paris in Israel, where he set up a second studio in 1950. Related literature : Ss dir.
