Oscar Meistchaninoff (1886-1956) Head of a young Bulgarian Circa 1920 Black patina bronze Signed "O. miestchaninoff" and numbered "7/13". Bears the founder's stamp "C. VALSUANI CIRE PERDUE Inside numbered "3062 H. 32 cm, on a black Belgian marble base H. 17 cm Arriving in Paris in 1906, Russian-born sculptor Oscar Miestchaninoff trained in the studios of Antonin Mercié and Joseph Bernard at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. Settling in Montparnasse, he became part of the select circle of École de Paris artists from Eastern Europe. He exhibited alongside Jacques Lipchitz, Chana Orloff and Ossip Zadkine. Around 1923-1924, the painter Chaïm Soutine painted his portrait (oil on canvas, 83 x 65 cm, Paris, Centre Pompidou, inv. AM 1972-30). Fascinated by the Far East, Miestchaninoff painted many portraits inspired by his travels. He presented Tête de jeune Bulgare (Head of a Young Bulgarian) at the Salon d'Automne in 1913.
