Gilbert Privat (1892-1969) - Lot 150
Gilbert Privat (1892-1969) Maternity ward Pierre Signed on the back "G.Privat". 30 x 30 x 11 cm. The theme of Maternity, often of rare gentleness, is regularly explored by the sculptor. Here, he imbues the stone with a softness that is accentuated by the rounded composition, enhancing the intimate character of the subject. La Maternité was presented at an exhibition held in his apartment at 41 rue Boulard (Paris XVIe), and can be seen in a photograph reproduced in the book Gilbert Privat, 1892-1969 : sculpteur et peintre. Related literature: Odette-Gilbert Privat, Marie-Odile Lefevre, Gilbert Privat, 1892-1969 : sculpteur et peintre, Boulogne Billancourt, Édition des Amis du Musée des années 30, 1997. Gilbert Privat, the son of a woodcarver, was born in Toulouse. He attended the Beaux-Arts in his native city, before continuing his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1910, where he studied under Jules Coutan. From 1920, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, presenting works on a variety of subjects: childhood, religious art, allegories... and received several commissions for war memorials. He also created works for the publishing industry, notably in wood for D.I.M. and in cookie for the Manufacture de Sèvres. At the 1937 Exposition Universelle, he created several bas-reliefs for the pontifical pavilion, including Figure (in mahogany); Flore; Diane à la biche (in stone). From the 1920s onwards, he distinguished himself by creating numerous bas-reliefs in wood, stone or slate, both small-scale and intended to adorn facades, as in Bordeaux and Paris. The Musée des Beaux-Arts (Bordeaux), the Musée des Années Trente (Boulogne-Billancourt), the Musée de la Piscine (Roubaix) and the Musée Despiau-Wlérick (Mont-de-Marsan) hold several of his works.
