Joseph Rivière moved to Paris in 1934 and entered the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he worked in Jean Boucher's studio. Honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1935, he was awarded the Prix Chevenard in 1936 thanks to the support of Charles Despiau. In 1937, he took part in the Paris Universal Exhibition, creating statuary for the Guyenne and Gascogne Pavilions. This marked the start of a promising career, with numerous commissions, which were abruptly interrupted by the war. In 1943, he took part in two exhibitions: Retour de captivité at the Musée Galliera and La Jeune Sculpture française at the Galerie Charpentier. After the war, he exhibited at the Salon d'automne, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Peintres témoins de leur temps. Founder of the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture in 1949, he exhibited there every year until his death, and obtained several commissions as part of the 1% artistic scheme (Groupe scolaire Bessangé, Bordeaux; Lycée de jeunes filles, Caen). A major tribute was paid to him by his friends at the Jeune Sculpture in 1961.
