Carlo Sarrabezolles (1888-1971) Study for The Elements Pencil and white chalk enhancement Signed lower right "C.Sarrabezolles". 49 x 63.5 cm (view) Our study is preparatory to the sculpture group Les Eléments, which crowns the attic of the Passy wing of the Palais de Chaillot, built for the 1937 Paris International Exhibition. Born in Toulouse, Sarrabezolles continued his training, which had begun in his hometown at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Paris in 1908, entering the studio of Antonin Mercié. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français. After the First World War, he took part in the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, presenting the monumental statue of La Danse Triomphale de Pallas Athénée, and La Vierge de la Paix in plaster. For the 1931 Exposition Internationale des Colonies, he participated in the decoration of several pavilions. For the 1937 Exposition Internationale, his masterpiece Les Éléments couronnant l'attique de l'aile Passy in the Palais de Chaillot was one of the sculptor's major works. He was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Exposition.
