François Black (1881 - 1959) - Lot 114
François Black (1881 - 1959) Maternity Plaster Signed on the terrace "F.Black". 37 x 15.5 x 16 cm. Of Polish origin, François Black traveled to London in 1901 before moving to Paris in 1903, where he studied with Antonin Mercié at the École des Beaux-Arts. Thanks to the support of his patron, pianist-composer and politician Ignace Paderewski, he lived in Switzerland between 1911 and 1918, where he devoted himself to direct carving in stone, marble and wood, before returning permanently to Paris and turning to terracotta. He received numerous commissions from French, American and Polish personalities, including Jose Iturbi, Simon Bolivar and Ignace Padarewski, of whom the Musée intercommunal de Saint-Maur holds a bronze proof. In 1929, he took part in the Société Bolivarienne d'Équateur competition, whose jury was chaired by Maillol. He won first prize for his bust of Bolivar. Bas-reliefs adorn the nave dedicated to Simon Bolivar in the National Pantheon in Caracas, Venezuela. A terracotta version of our Maternité is kept at the Bibliothèque Polonaise in Paris (Inv. RZ79).
