Manolo Martinez Hugué known as Manolo (1872-1945) - Lot 94
Manolo Martinez Hugué known as Manolo (1872-1945) Female nude Circa 1911-1912 Plaster print 32 x 12.5 x 9 cm. Born in Barcelona, Manolo joined Picasso in Paris in 1900. For ten years, the sculptor lived the bohemian life, meeting other artists (Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Léon-Paul Fargue) and frequenting the capital's museums. His career as a sculptor didn't really begin until 1910, with the help of his friend, the Catalan musician Déodat de Séverac, who lived in Céret. Thanks to the support of his dealer D.-H. Kahnweiler, his work came to the fore: he exhibited at the Armory Show in New York in 1913, then in Germany and Paris. Thereafter, he regularly exhibited his work in the United States, Spain and France. In 1932, France celebrated him with a major exhibition at the Grand Palais. He took part in the exhibition Les Maîtres de l'Art Indépendant held at the Petit Palais during the Exposition Internationale in 1937. An admirer of Aristide Maillol, Manolo sculpts small statuettes of round female figures, but with a more marked stylization of shapes and faces, often inspired by Spanish culture (peasant women, dancers). Manolo created a bronze version of this Female Nude, exhibited in 1995.
