Paul Landowski (1875-1961) - Lot 87
Paul Landowski (1875-1961) The pugilist Model created in 1920; posthumous casting Bronze with brown patina Signed and numbered "E.A. I/IV". Bears the mark of the Susse foundry H. 102 cm Le Pugiliste is one of a series of four sculptures on the theme of boxing by Landowski. The set includes Le Boxeur tombé (1921, bronze, Musée Landowski, Boulogne-Billancourt) and two unrealized projects, Boxeur mettant ses bandelettes and Combat. For this figure of the Pugiliste, Paul Landowski took as his model the boxer Georges Carpentier, whom he had met in 1912. Following the evolution of the athlete's body over several years, Landowski eventually depicted the boxer standing naked, face turned to the left, fists bandaged. When the plaster cast was exhibited at the 1920 Salon, this nudity drew criticism, and the sculptor had to plan to clothe the model for a reduced version. In the end, a vine leaf modestly masked the boxer's nudity. The sculpture was entered in the sculpture competition at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, and won an award in 1928 at the art competition for the Olympic athletics tournament in Amsterdam.
