Paul Landowski (1875-1961) - Lot 86
Paul Landowski (1875-1961) The sons of Cain: Tubalcain, the blacksmith Black patina bronze Signed "P. Landowski" and numbered "n°1". H. 47 cm This blacksmith is one of the figures in the group Les Fils de Caïn (Sons of Cain), the final shipment from Rome by sculptor Paul Landowski and part of the monumental Temple de l'Homme project. The group represents three men of different ages, embodying humanity on the move. Our bronze takes the figure of the blacksmith Tubalcain, embodying the power of work, while the other two, Jabel, the young shepherd, and Jubal, the first poet, represent physical strength and the power of thought. Paul Landowski's models for this biblical group were men he had met in the Roman countryside. The bronze, based on a plaster cast made in Rome, was exhibited at the 1906 Salon, where the sculptor was awarded a first-class medal and praised by both the Académie and the critics. Acquired by the State the same year, the bronze group was installed in the Cour Napoléon, then moved to the Jardin des Tuileries. According to the artist's family, our bronze was probably cast in Italy between 1903 and 1906. A certificate from the indivision Landowski may be issued to the purchaser.
