Antonin Carlès (1851-1919) Bacchus as a child Model created circa 1908 Gilded bronze Signed "ANTONIN CARLÈS". Bears the founder's mark "SIOT-PARIS". H. 47.5 cm 1 Antonin Carlès trained successively with François Jouffroy and Ernest-Eugène Hiolle at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, Toulouse and Paris. Initially recognized for his portraits, he made his debut at the 1878 Salon, where the French State acquired one of his works. In 1908, he presented a marble statuette of Bacchus as a child. Carlès took on numerous official commissions, winning a travel grant for his figure La Jeunesse in 1883 and the Grand Prix at the 1889 Exposition Universelle for Le Retour de la Chasse.
