Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902) - Lot 59
Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902) La fraternité, also known as La République or L'Union des peuples Model created circa 1878-1882; published by Susse from 1902 onwards Relief in bronze with brown patina Signed "DALOU" lower right Bearing the circular insert of the Susse foundry H. 45 x W. 28.2 cm, in original natural wood frame H. 56 x W. 39.2 cm In 1883, Aimé-Jules Dalou won the Medal of Honor for his monumental high-relief in plaster entitled La Fraternité, also known as La République or L'Union des peuples. Begun in London in 1878 and completed in his Paris studio on his return from exile, this relief depicts three allegories symbolizing the virtues of the Republic in the upper register, and a crowd embodying republican felicity in the lower register. The City of Paris acquired the plaster and commissioned a marble version, completed by Auguste Becker between 1904 and 1908. Our relief corresponds to the 1/10th scale model produced between 1878 and 1882, which was published in bronze by Susse under a contract signed with the artist's heirs in 1902.
