Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) - Lot 50
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) Puys or The Vignette Fisherwoman Model created in 1874; studio edition from the same date Bronze with brown patina Signed, located and dated "JB Carpeaux Dieppe 1874". Stamped "PROPRIETE CARPEAUX" with imperial eagle Titled "Puys". H. 72.5 cm The model for Pêcheuse de vignots à Puys was born of the artist's encounter with a young fisherwoman. Very ill, Carpeaux was staying in Puys (near Dieppe), where his friend Alexandre Dumas had provided him with a studio. In a letter to Bruno Chérier, he recounts his meeting with the young girl, whom he then invited to pose for him: "... I saw from the top of the carriage an admirable leg emerging in the movement of walking, from under rags that only went down to the knees....". This was the last model he made for the publishing house before his death the following year. It was used by his workshop from 1875 onwards.
