France, late 15th century - Lot 260
France, late 15th century Flamboyantly decorated niche in limestone. Wear and accidents 72 x 40 x 15 cm This elegant niche with its cul-de-four base originally featured a medium-sized sculpture of a saint, identified by a cartouche in the lower part that has now been erased. The divine representation stood beneath a canopy made up of an infill section with eight openings in the form of round-arched bays. On the front, a pediment with vegetal crosses is topped by a finial at the top. At the bottom, a charming winged putto in a hooked half-lobe seems to be descending towards the missing statue. On either side of the lateral columns, two large flared ribbed leaves complete this magnificent decoration, a fine example of flamboyant Gothic art.
