Benedetto Cacciatori, a neoclassical sculptor from Carrara, was commissioned to create a large number of sculptures for the Hautecombe Abbey, which had been undergoing restoration since 1825 under the reign of Carlo Felice of Savoy. In this context, he created a Pietà, so successful that the model was reused in the Tempio San Sebastiano in Milan, as well as to adorn the sculptor's tomb in Milan's Monumental Cemetery.
