Icon of the Apparition of Christ to Saint Mary Magdalene on - Lot 237
Icon of the Apparition of Christ to Saint Mary Magdalene on the morning of the Resurrection "Noli me tangere". Gold tempera on wood. Creto-Venetian school (?), early 17th century. 35 x 28 cm. History This icon illustrates the appearance of Jesus to Saint Mary Magdalene on the morning of the Resurrection. She wanted to touch him, but he stopped her, saying "do not touch me; noli me tangere" (Gospel according to Saint John, chapter 20, verses 14 ff.). The woman with the hair is typical of the prostitute that St. Mary Magdalene was before her conversion, while the covered jar she is carrying contains what is needed to embalm Jesus' body. The latter bears the marks of crucifixion and the standard of the Resurrection in a classical representation. His open hand stops the spontaneous movement of the Holy Penitent. The open tomb is depicted on the left, while on the right is a view of Jerusalem from its promontory.
