Cornet". 41.4 x 19 x 20 cm Provenance: artist's studio Abattis on both legs and right arm The work is present in the artist's studio on a photograph reproduced in Cornet, cat. exp. Bruton, Bruton Gallery, 1987, p. 4. Born in Paris in 1892, Paul Cornet began training at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris in 1910. At the same time, he frequented the studios of Ossip Zadkine and Diego Rivera. Initially influenced by the art of Rodin, he later turned to the works of Maillol and Despiau. As early as 1930, Cornet received his first commissions for monumental sculptures, executing La Campagne in 1937 for the Palais de Chaillot on the occasion of the Exposition Universelle, Vénus et l'Amour around 1942 for the Orangerie de Meudon and La Tour d'Auvergne in 1943 for the Pantheon. In 1963, with Jean Carton, Marcel Damboise and Léopold Kretz, he founded the Groupe des Neuf under the aegis of Juliette Darle. The group embodied the existence and persistence of independent figurative sculpture. Towards the end of his life, Cornet was awarded the Prix Wildenstein (1967) and the Prix Paul-Louis Weiller (1972).
