Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue (1931-1996) The... - Lot 290 - Crait + Müller
Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue (1931-1996) The village Canvas Signed lower right 30.5 x 40.5 cm Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue, born in Port-au-Prince in 1930 and died in 1996, is a leading figure in modern Haitian painting. Joining the Centre d'Art in 1947, he developed a unique style, characterized by depictions of Haitian mountains, gaunt trees, peasants and their huts, and by the use of voodoo symbolism in a fantastical approach. His works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and have appeared in prestigious sales at Sotheby's and Christie's in Europe, North America and Latin America. His determination made Gourgue a master of expressionism, recognizable by his precise drawing, play of light and vibrant color palette, as Gérald Alexis points out in his book "Peintres Haïtiens".
