Workshop of Jean-Victor BERTIN (1767-1842) - Lot 94
Workshop of Jean-Victor BERTIN (1767-1842) Shepherdess and her flock near a fortified town in stormy weather Oil on canvas. 33.5 x 41.5 cm Bibliography : - Marie-Madeleine Aubrun, "Aspects du paysage néo-classique de 1790 à 1855", Galerie du Fleuve, May 30-June 22, 1974, no. 7bis, (as Bertin), Vallée italienne, non repr. - Lydia Harambourg, "Dictionnaire des Peintres Paysagistes Français au XIXe siècle", Ed. Ides et Calendes, 1985, (reproduced). We would like to thank Damien Dumarquez and Jean-Louis Litron, authors of the Jean-Victor Bertin catalog raisonné currently in preparation, for the information they kindly provided. In 1788, Jean-Victor Bertin became a pupil of Valenciennes, who encouraged him to paint Italian landscapes in the manner of Poussin and Lorrain. His landscapes, executed in Italy, are for the most part recomposed in the studio, according to the rules of classical conception inherited from Poussin. Bertin is one of the great names in French neo-classical landscape painting, often depicting ancient ruins. His studio was frequented by generations of artists such as Corot, Michallon, Coignet, Fleury, Rémond and Roqueplan, and gave rise to numerous vocations as landscape artists.
