Motherhood and childhood were themes dear to Aimé-Jules Dalou during his exile in England. The Buste de bébé endormi was originally a study for the group Parisienne allaitant (Paris, Petit Pa- lais, inv. PPS298), the marble of which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1872. It also features in other compositions by the sculptor, notably the Berceuse and the Monument aux petits-enfants de la Reine Victoria. The model for this charming bust was produced in marble during the artist's lifetime and in bronze by the Hébrard foundry under a contract drawn up by the heirs in 1902.
