SLAVERY] - General statement of the results of the patronage of slaves in the French colonies. Printed by order of the Minister Secretary of State for the Navy and the Colonies. Paris. Imprimerie Royale. June 1844. In-4 bound in red half calf, smooth spine decorated with romantic gilt - [2 ff., fx-title, title], 668 pp. The survey conducted in Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana and Bourbon Island (Reunion) gives for each colony instructions and observations concerning the organization and exercise of patronage and informs about the moral and material condition of slaves. The points dealt with concern: food, clothing, hospitals, huts and gardens, work, savings, escapes and marooning, the disciplinary system, religious and elementary instruction, the census and registration of slaves, and emancipations. The appendix contains the 10 edicts, ordinances and regulations that regulated slavery, from the code noir (edict of 03/1685) to the royal order of 16/09/1841.
