Gustav Adolphe Hierholtz (1877-1954) Elephant tearing off a stump Bronze with patina Signed " G. Hierholtz ". Bears the founder's mark " Susse Frs Edts Paris " and the mention " cire perdue ". H. 37 x W. 42 x D. 17,5 cm Gustav Hierholtz, of Swiss origin but of Alsatian parents, studied at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris. He became a practitioner for Auguste Rodin before becoming a boarder at the Villa Abd-El-Tif in 1912. Mobilized to go to Indochina in 1915, he was wounded and repatriated to France. Marked by his experience in Indochina, he returned there in 1919 and directed the School of Applied Arts until 1930. In addition to important public commissions, he devoted himself to animal art for which he obtained success and awards. The Musée du Quai Branly in Paris holds several of his works.
