Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) - Lot 70
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) Love and Psyche Bronze with brown patina Signed " Carrier-Belleuse H. 44 cm, terrace 51,6 x 25,5 cm The model of this bronze dates from 1860. Groups whose subject is taken from antiquity and treated in a narrative way by the artist are rare. Here he captures the moment when Psyche, unable to resist the desire to discover the identity of her lover, leans over his sleeping body with confidence. The sculptor was probably inspired by the famous painting by Jacques-Louis David (Cleveland, Museum of Art, inv. 1962.37). The artist worked with several bronze manufacturers in the last third of the 19th century (Christofle, Denière, Barbedienne). In the absence of a stamp, it is difficult to be certain as to the founder of our group, nevertheless the solid and precise casting suggests that it is probably a proof by Barbedienne in the 1870s.
