French school of the beginning of the XIXth century, after Christophe Gabriel Allegrain (1710-1795) The Bather known as "Venus in the Bath Bronze with brown patina shaded with red. Bears a signature on the reverse " C.C ALLEGRAIN. FECIT. / 1767". Wear to the patina. H. 85 cm King Louis XV commissioned Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain to paint a Venus emerging from the bath in marble to decorate the Château de Choisy, now in the Louvre. The sketch was presented at the Salon of 1757, the critics welcomed the marble at the Salon of 1767, Diderot said about it "Beautiful, beautiful, sublime figure, they even say the most beautiful, the most perfect figure of a woman that moderns have made. The work was finally offered by the king to his favorite Madame du Barry in 1772 and placed in the park of the château de Louveciennes.
