André BEAUCE (1911-1974) Suzanne accoudée Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. 55 x 65 cm André BEAUCÉ (1911-1974) This student of André Lhote, who was a drawing teacher throughout his life, lived for several years in Algeria, notably at the Villa Abd El Tif where he received a scholarship from 1946 to 1948. During this stay, the painter appropriated the intensity of the Mediterranean light and colors as evidenced by the dancing parasols, the noisy beach scenes and the views of the Medina flooded with sun. Thanks to a touch often thick of the knife, the artist dissects the personality of his portraits going to the essential and conferring them a silent, percussive and monumental presence. The ardor of his compositions, often structured by the strategic opposition of colors brings an unusual power to these works, which recall by their raw sincerity an expressionism without complacency, bordering on caricature at times.
