RARE AND MONUMENTAL HANGER in matte and shiny... - Lot 327 - Crait + Müller
RARE AND MONUMENTAL HANGER in matte and shiny gilt bronze, in two tones, representing Phaeton on the chariot of the Sun, drawn by four horses, according to the Metamorphoses of Ovid. He is represented on the arc of the Zodiac where the signs of fish, bull, Capricorn and Aquarius appear. Polychrome and gilded enamel ring dial. Sea green marble base resting on lion claw feet. After a model of Jean-Démosthène DUGOURC (1748-1825), attributed to the bronze worker Pierre-Philippe THOMIRE (1751-1843). Empire period. H. 68,5 W. 76,5 D. 23 cm This clock illustrates the moment in Ovid's story when Phaeton, intoxicated, does not yet realize that the horses are running amok, causing his fall and the world's conflagration. Another clock model by Thomire illustrates this dramatic episode. BIBLIOGRAPHY : P.
