Charles Malfray (1887-1940) - Lot 118
Charles Malfray (1887-1940) The Crouching Torso, 1930 Terra cotta Signed (on the front) "Malfray 42,5 x 45 x 36 cm In 1930, Charles Malfray gave birth to the Crouching Torso, a discreet homage to Rodin's Iris messenger of the gods. He executes a marcottage - a technique much appreciated by Rodin from the Seated Woman wiping her foot, created in 1928. From this massive figure, folded in on itself, he creates a wide-open composition, turning her bust backwards, removing her head and legs, and veiling her nudity. This play on form and structure allows the sculptor to give a heroic grandeur to the work. The Crouching Torso exists in two sizes, 16 cm and about 40 cm high.
