Homer. - Ilias. Glasgow, in aedibus academicis, Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1747. 2 volumes in 1 in-4. Bound in marbled calf, triple fillet on the armorial boards, smooth spine with 6 compartments decorated with a poppy flower. Different coats of arms on the first and last boards - First spine split over the whole height, crushed head and corners, scattered foxing - [2 ff.], 251 pp. ; [1 f.], 281 pp. (actually 271, as the pagination passes from 79 to 90 without a gap). Handwritten bookplate in ink on the first endpaper "Jauffret 1790". Entirely composed in Greek characters, this beautiful edition with large margins comes from the presses of the Foulis brothers who distinguished themselves by the excellence of their editions, reputed (though wrongly) to be without error. Irons of the University of Paris (OHR pl. 1596 iron no. 4 reduced and iron no. 5 reduced).
