Pascal DAGNAN-BOUVERET (1852-1929) Portrait... - Lot 158 - Crait + Müller
Pascal DAGNAN-BOUVERET (1852-1929) Portrait of a young woman with a dream, 1898 Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. Framing, restored tear in the right background, small repaints. 131 x 95 cm PROVENANCE : Pierre Jasmin Collection ?, (label on the back); Drouot sale, circa 1954; private collection, Paris (kept in his descendants since). EXHIBITION: Portraits et figures de femmes, Ingres à Picasso, exhibition at La Renaissance, June 1-30, 1928 (label on back) for the benefit of the Société des amis du Musée du Luxembourg. Catalogue published by La Renaissance, 1928. Dagnan-Bouveret had an impeccable career within the official movement, appearing among the regular exhibitors at the Paris Salons, admired by the public and rewarded by the institutions. A pupil of Cabanel and then Gérome, he was awarded second prize at the Grand Prix de Rome in 1876, was awarded several medals, and won the Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. He was then made a member of the Académie des Beaux-arts and awarded the Légion d'honneur that same year. He obtained the decoration of the amphitheatre of letters at the Sorbonne (1903). Dagnan-Bouveret was one of the most brilliant representatives of the naturalist movement, especially after the death of his mentor and friend Jules Bastien-Lepage: the life of the Franc-Comtois or Breton peasants (Pardon en Bretagne, 1889, Metropolitan Museum of New York) takes on a tragic and sacred grandeur under his illusionist brush. But he was also a great worldly portraitist and exhibited female portraits at the Salon from 1897 onwards, effigies of beauties who illuminated Parisian life. With his elegant brush, the artist captures the resemblance but also seeks the character of the models. Our portrait is a brilliant example: the sophistication of the young woman is underlined by her elegant pose and the perfect oval of her face supported by a hand with long, tapering fingers; her seductive and determined character is expressed by a deep gaze and a sibylline smile. Dagnan chose an incandescent yellow fabric for the armchair, the light of which bathes the entire canvas and suggests an ardent and passionate soul for his model.
