BEKOM MASK, Cameroon Hard wood with a dark brown and black patina. H. 42 cm Face characteristic of the style, open to large eyes whose full volume is surrounded by a palpebral fold. The nose with its wide wings surmounts a mouth open to small teeth. Dominating the high forehead is a headdress made of native cloth, also used to describe a beard. Anthropomorphic masks from Grassland are worn on various occasions, including funerals of high dignitaries or during festivities.
