Charles MALFRAY (1887-1940) - Lot 77
Charles MALFRAY (1887-1940) Cybèle, 1939-1940 Unique terracotta proof. Signed (on the back) MALFRAY. 17 x 47 x 18 cm SOURCE : - Françoise Galle, Catalogue raisonné des sculptures de Charles Malfray, DESS thesis, University of Paris I, under the direction of Robert Julien, 1971, n°147. BIBLIOGRAPHIE : - Jacques de Laprade, Malfray, Paris, Fernand Mourlot, 1944. - Charles Malfray 1887-1940 sculpteur, cat. exp., Paris, galerie Malaquais (5 April-30 June 2007), Paris, galerie Malaquais, 2007. Cybèle, personification of the nourishing power of nature, presents all of Malfray's plastic research. A testament to a rich sensuality, the lustful elongated figure is part of a group of horizontal sculptures created between 1936 and 1940. Impressed with archaism by its powerful and compact forms, it attests to the sculptor's admiration for the great masters. The terracotta was presented at the Salon d'Automne in 1941 and at the Guérin Gallery in 1948. The foundryman Alexis Rudier made bronze proofs of this model from the original plaster.
