In Montserrat Blanch's catalogue raisonné, it is indicated that this bearded man might be Aristide Maillol. Manolo painted this portrait in 1925, during his second stay in Céret, which began in 1919 and ended in 1927. During this period, Manolo and Maillol, who knew each other well, met on an occasional basis, forging ties around their work. Manolo accentuates the serious and serene expression of the model, which is not without recalling the practice of medieval picture-makers. In 1923, the portrait of Josep Maragall, treated as a mask, has the same expression of serene strength. This print bears a label from the Simon gallery, which is the second gallery run by D-H Kahnweiler.
