Illustrated cover completed. With 48 black illustrations in the text and 32 non-text plates in gravure in bistre and black by Alexandre Iacovleff. Original edition. Numbered 210 on 500 copies published on Arches vellum paper. Very good condition. Alexandre Yevgenievich Iacovleff (1887-1938) is a French naturalized Russian painter who became famous for his many portraits of Africans and Asians. In 1920, he moved to Paris, France, where he gained a certain reputation through exhibitions. He publishes drawings on China and Japan. He was appointed official painter of the Croisière noire and then the Croisière jaune. Serge Elisséeff (1889-1975) is a French orientalist of Russian origin. Passionate about China and Japan, he studies both languages. When the October Revolution broke out, he emigrated to France. He became a translator at the Japanese Embassy; he also worked at the Musée Guimet and taught Japanese civilization at the École du Louvre and the Institut des langues orientales.
