Charron, Pierre. - De la Sagesse, three books following the - Lot 161
Charron, Pierre. - De la Sagesse, three books following the true copy of Bourdeaux. Amsterdam, Louis and Daniel Elzevier, 1662. In-12, bound in tortoise-shell calf, triple fillet, spine ribbed, gilt edges. - Spine faded, all edges rubbed, head-cap partly frayed, first spinebone cracked, spinebones heavily rubbed - [8 ff.], 622, [8] pp. engraved frontispiece. Fourth and last Elzevier edition, the only one produced by the Elzeviers of Amsterdam, "very well executed" (Willems). The engraved frontispiece is taken from the previous editions. It depicts Wisdom personified by a naked woman on a pedestal, crowned with laurel and olive branches as a sign of victory and peace. Behind her, the motto of Wisdom and that of Charron are displayed on two phylacteries: Je ne sais et Paix et peu. Charron's work is a treatise on religious tolerance, advocating the separation of morality and religion and paving the way for purely secular thought. An emulator and friend of Montaigne, Charron was accused of atheism and his work was put on the Index.
