[Mauvillon, Eleazar de]. - History of Frederick... - Lot 45 - Crait + Müller
[Mauvillon, Eleazar de]. - History of Frederick William I King of Prussia and Elector of Brandenburg etc. Amsterdam and Leipzig, Arkstée and Merkus, 1741. 2 vols. in-12 calf with very ornate spines - Corners pierced in the first volume, small spalls. - III-[1]-416, 454 pp. with portraits of Frederick William and Sophie Dorothea engraved by Duflos. - First edition of this biography of the second King of Prussia, Frederick William I (1638-1740), nicknamed the Sergeant King. Uncommon work given one year after the death of this monarch. Mauvillon (1712-1779), who was secretary to the Elector of Saxony, paints a portrait of this tyrannical, inflexible and cruel king who put the army before everything else. During his reign, the military strength of Prussia increased from 40 0000 to 80 000 men. Through several conflicts, especially at the beginning of his reign, he increased the Prussian territory in a significant way. He was a militaristic king, but also a thrifty one, who knew how to manage his kingdom well, abandoning the arts, literature and culture in general.
