Charles Malfray (1887-1940) The Truth,... - Lot 124 - Crait + Müller
Charles Malfray (1887-1940) The Truth, 1932 Proof in bronze with green patina, n°3/8. Lost wax casting Claude Valsuani. Signed (twice, on the terrace) " Ch. Malfray et CH. MALFRAY". 58 x 29 x 31 cm Malfray began the realization of La Vérité at the end of a work session with his students at the Académie Ranson, where he had been teaching for nearly a year thanks to the support of Aristide Maillol. La Vérité carries an intense emotional charge. The variety of titles attributed to it testifies to this: Woman Wiping Her Back; The Awakening; Life Liberating Itself from Nature. Two sizes are known for The Truth: 55 cm high, and 120 cm high. Two 120 cm plaster casts are held in French public collections: one in the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (purchased at public auction, 1958, AMS 335); the other in the Musée National d'Art Moderne (gift of M. Gillekens, 1952, AM 942 S). The work has been produced in bronze in both sizes, and has been exhibited many times.
