Manuel Martinez Hugué known as Manolo (1872-1945) La Ronde or La Sardana, 1923 Bas-relief Proof in terra cotta, n°3 Label (on the back): Galerie Simon / 29 bis rue d'Astorg / Paris (VIIIe) / 1923 / 3 / N°7897 / Manolo / La Ronde / 37 x 33 / Photo N°4527 37 x 33 x 4 cm Provenance: Paris, Galerie Simon France, Marcel Arland collection La Sardana is one of the many terracottas and bas-reliefs by the sculptor evoking his particular affection for traditional Catalan culture. He used several models such as La Catalane, the Picador and the Flamenco Dancer. The sobriety of the features and the simplicity of the forms do not detract from the expression of a sweetness and a joy of living that emerges from the composition as if it had been quickly sketched. The dance remains a theme dear to the artist and this bas-relief evokes the long tradition of bas-reliefs sculpted since Antiquity of friezes dedicated to the dance. Dated 1923 on the label on the back and in Josep Pla's first monographic work in 1928, La Sardana, also titled La Ronde, was made in the same year as the first monographic exhibition of Manolo's work organized by Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler at the Simon Gallery. Despite the difficulties encountered by the gallery during the First World War, the dealer remained faithful to the Catalan sculptor and the André Simon gallery, with which he associated, proceeded to publish numbered terracottas in order to contribute to the diffusion of his work. The Simon Gallery label on the back bears the number 3: while the catalog of the important monographic exhibition devoted to him in 1997 in Madrid mentions La Sardana in an edition justified at 20 copies, the Simon Gallery generally planned for 15 copies. This copy comes from the important collection of the writer Marcel Arland, winner of the Goncourt Prize in 1928, member of the French Academy, friend of André Malraux and Jean Paulhan, with whom he directed the magazine Comoedia, published by Gallimard.
