Diehl, Charles - Orazi, Manuel - Theodora... - Lot 304 - Crait + Müller
Diehl, Charles - Orazi, Manuel - Theodora Empress of Byzantium. Paris, Édition d'art H. Piazza et Cie, 1904. 1 vol in-4. Bound in full turquoise morocco, the boards richly decorated with a large framing with scrolls, interspersed with six mosaic boxes of alternating tan and brown leather, spine with four ornate nerves, with a central mosaic decoration of brown leather, edges decorated with a double fillet, interior decorated with a double roulette separated by a double fillet and a row of dotted lines, shaped and edged case, gilt edges, illustrated covers and spine preserved (L. Illustrated by Manuel Orazi with 60 compositions in colour and gold, 12 of them out of the text. Limited edition of 300 copies, one of the 30 on Japon including the suite of black compositions (n° 19). A specimen prospectus printed in a small number of copies for subscribing booksellers, reproducing 4 of the compositions, is included. It is not a novel but a historical study, written by a lecturer at the University of Paris and whose illustrations are based both on traditional iconography and on the most recent archaeological discoveries. In spite of this scrupulous research, the illustrations betray their period and some scenes, notably those of intimacy, have a very strong 1900s character, well in the spirit of Orazi.
