In-4, bound in full brown jansenist morocco, spine with 5 nerves, double fillet on the edges, double fillets on the spine flanking a band decorated with Egyptian motifs, gilt headband, illustrated cover preserved, slipcase lined with suede (Chambolle-Duru) - Minor damage to the slipcase, spine very slightly oiled [3 ff.], 262 pp. Illustrated with 42 original compositions by Alex. Lunois, engraved with burin and etching by Léon Boisson. The specimen subscription leaflet in the same format and on the same paper as the work is enclosed. Inspired by the Egyptomania in vogue in France since the return from Egypt, Théophile Gautier's novel is based both on the scholarly works of his friend Ernest Feydeau (father of the most famous Georges), dedicatee of the work, but also on the scripture, the plot featuring Moses in the last part of the novel.
