Gogol, Nicholas - Grinevsky, Alexandra. -... - Lot 255 - Crait + Müller
Gogol, Nicholas - Grinevsky, Alexandra. - Taras Bulba. Paris, La Pléiade, 1931. In-4, paperback with green illustrated cover by N. Altman (slight cracks on the spine) - 239 pp, [3 ff. notes, table, justification]. Illustrated with 32 coloured etchings by A. Grinevsky including the title, 12 h-t, 12 in-t at the head of the chapters and 7 caps. Edition of 110 copies, 1 on Japon supernacré, 99 on vélin à la forme de Rives and 10 not put in the market, this one of the 99 (n° 96). A. Grinevsky (1899-1976), Russian by birth, actress (mainly with Pitoëff) and engraver, she was the first wife of the artist Alexeieff (from 1921 or 1923 to 1941). She illustrated only 4 books, Paludes by Gide, two lyrical artists by V. Larbaud, L'archidiable Belphégor by Machiavelli and Tarass Boulba. Her style, very much inspired by Alexéieff's in her black engravings, emancipates itself from him as soon as she approaches colour where her evocations find all the strength of the Russian soul.
