Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Jacques-Henri.... - Lot 160 - Crait + Müller
Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Jacques-Henri. - Paul and Virginia and The Indian Cottage. Paris, L. Curmer, 1838. In-4, red morocco binding, boards decorated with an oriental plate, central medallion in reserve, smooth spine with interlacing decoration, inner lace, moiré endpapers, gilt edges. Deluxe publisher's binding by Simier - slight spidering to the spines, spine a little faded, scattered foxing - [9 ff.], LVI, 458, [1] pp. 29 wood-engraved plates on China paper, 7 steel-engraved portraits and 421 vignettes mainly after Tony Johannot, Français, Isabey, Meissonier, Marville, etc. Missing the map of the Ile de France. Sumptuous edition of this pre-romantic novel, of which there are no more editions. Undoubtedly "the pearl of the illustrated books of the 19th century" (Brivois). Our copy presents the characteristics of the second edition described by Carteret: address of the rue de Richelieu, the portrait of the young bramine does not include the star; page 418, the vignette known as La bonne femme does not appear; at the end of the table of engravings, the portrait of O. Smith in medallion is accompanied by the engraver's instruments, etc. However, the portrait of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, which includes a sphere in the current edition, is here printed as an artist's proof before the sphere.
