Translated from the English. By M. Le Moine, Doctor-Regent of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Paris. Work enriched with Notes, with 18 figures. First edition of the translation of "An essay towards a complete new System of Midwifery, theoretical and practical" (1751). Burton is the first to suggest that puerperal fever is contagious, as well as being the first to discuss caesarean section in detail.

The first volume, signed by the author and justified n° 51, is devoted to the effects of the syphilitic virus on the organs of generation in both sexes; the second to the effects of the syphilitic virus on the whole system of the animal economy. A chapter is devoted to the treatment of pregnant women and children.
