Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue (1931-1996) The... - Lot 291 - Crait + Müller
Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue (1931-1996) The guinea fowl Isorel panel Signed lower left 61 x 91 cm (Slight accidents) Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue, born in 1930 in Port-au-Prince and died in 1996, is an emblematic figure of modern Haitian painting. Joining the Centre d'Art in 1947, he developed a unique style, characterized by depictions of Haitian mountains, gaunt trees, peasants and their huts, and by the use of voodoo symbolism in a fantastic approach. His works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and have appeared in prestigious sales at Sotheby's and Christie's in Europe, North America and Latin America. His determination made Gourgue a master of expressionism, recognizable by his precise drawing, play of light and vibrant color palette, as Gérald Alexis points out in his book "Peintres Haïtiens".
